Special Solutions Highlight: Museums

Many organizations have gift shops, thrift stores or other retail or commercial needs in addition to the standard accounting of nonprofits. These organizations often need additional financial management tools to augment their standard nonprofit accounting and accommodate their retail needs. For example, gift shops are a revenue staple in many museums. The store environment requires additional inventory and point-of-sale functionality—preferably integrated to keep reporting simple and accurate for the accounting team. To meet these special needs of museums, Best’s Nonprofit division has a partnership with Synchronics, the manufacturer of CounterPoint, a best of breed point-of-sale and inventory system.

Best product development and partners worked with Synchronics to build an integration that allows transactions to be imported into MIP Fund Accounting with summary sales information and accounts payable invoices. MIP Fund Accounting with the integrated Counterpoint creates an end-to-end solution that is now being used by museums clients across the US.

Museums can vary considerably in size and type, but most tend to rely on docents, volunteers and donations to keep their doors open and their exhibits and programs available. Fundraising and membership management are critical activities to many museums. Only Best offers the range of solutions that can meet the variety of needs and development programs to accommodate museums of all types—from the size and breadth of the Smithsonian to small historical home museums.
